Hu Lindsay

The exhibit will be on display at ucbc bakery & cafe until September 30th

Throughout his successful 50-year career as a commercial artist, Hu Lindsay continued to paint, mostly abstracts, experimenting with a variety of media. In the 1980s, his geometric artwork created with animators’ cel paints were featured in a show at the Café Figaro on Bleeker Street in New York City. Since his retirement in 2000, Lindsay’s collages and paintings have been juried into exhibits in Greenwich, New Canaan, Newtown, Norwalk, Ridgefield and Rowayton and at the Putnam County Art Council in Mahopack, NY.

For six weeks in 2009, Lindsay had a one-man show of 44 collages at St. Paul’s on the Green in Norwalk and he returned to that venue this past fall for a retrospective exhibit featuring 18 artists.  Also during 2010, he was one of five artists featured in “A Toast To Longevity,” the inaugural exhibit at The Skyroom Gallery in Atria Stamford.

In addition, the Fairfield Arts Council chose one of Lindsay’s collages for a project that converted works by 80 artists into banners that were displayed for three months. His collages also were selected for display in the windows at Max’s Art Supply in Westport and for group shows at the Darien Sports Shop and Flow of Art Gallery in Norwalk.

Works by this award-winning artist are in private collections in California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Brazil and The Netherlands.

Opening Reception will be held at UCBC on Thursday August 11th, 6-8 PM.

Ben Larabee - Moments of Grace

Moments of Grace: Family Portraits
An exhibit of Ben Larrabee’s exceptional
black-and-white fine art portrait photography

Upper Crust Bakery & Café
980 Post Road, Darien CT 06820

May 9 – September 17, 2011

Ben Larrabee calls his work Moments of Grace referring to those fleeting yet memorable moments every family has but rarely sees captured in photographs. His photographs show families acting naturally and spontaneously, expressing their spirit and love for one another.

His formal training as an artist began in 1962 at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) where he discovered his passion through mentor, world-renowned photographer Harry Callahan, and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography. In 1978, he continued his studies at Yale University, where he earned an MFA in graphic design.

Larrabee’s fine art background has trained him to photograph as an artist so by instinct he includes elements of composition, rhythm, texture and space in his images.

Larrabee’s work is in the permanent collections of:

  • The George Eastman House, Rochester
  • The High Museum, Atlanta
  • The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston
  • The Museum of Modern Art, New York

Grace Daly is currently a Darien High School senior whose artistic focus is photography. She has studied photography and printmaking for the last three years both inside and outside of school. In addition to black and white photography Grace works with chalk pastels and oil paints. She is currently a part of the AP Studio Art Program at Darien and will be attending The School of Visual Arts in New York City in the upcoming fall. In this exhibition Grace has chosen to present her investigation of various mediums while simultaneously concentrating on her passion for photography. Many pieces represent her life experiences such as her series of Honduras where she has volunteered her time at an orphanage in San Pedro Sula since she was eleven. Volunteering in Honduras has been the most influential experience in her life and has been a blueprint in shaping her morals and character. While pursuing her artistic interests in college, Grace hopes to continue her exploration of impoverished areas. She aspires to visit these societies and cultures, discover the hidden conflicts which negatively effect them, and produce photographs which artistically explain the issues in these places. Through increasing knowledge and exposure to these problems Grace hopes to inspire others to take action and provide aid. She draws much of her inspiration from photographers Jacob Riis and Steve McCurry; she hopes to apply her artistic ability to the real world and create art which will inspire others to make a difference.
